RAUSCH
In RAUSCH, Falk Richter and Anouk van Dijk explore the contemporary human psyche; our fears, ambitions and state of being. Not long ago, it seemed to be the dawn of an age in which we could only continue advancing.
With all the accoutrements of the modern Western society, we were used to controlling every detail of our lives, from minute to minute. However, the financial crisis of 2008 revealed a totally new reality. Suddenly, we appear to be living in a world that is out of control; too big to be controlled by people or countries any more. We are rapidly losing our grip on the world around us, and yet we put up a fight and try to recover our faith, in the hope of a lucky escape.
With seven dancers, five actors and three musicians, Richter and Van Dijk investigate in RAUSCH the uncontrollable forces that define the character of our times. The almost physical presence of Ben Frost’s music gets the dancers moving and forces them either to resist the overwhelming sound or to submit, and let it move them in a trance. RAUSCH portrays mankind’s struggle with modern reality in images, words, sounds and movements. In RAUSCH, Richter, Van Dijk and Frost have created a common language of dance, theatre and music.
read more >Can a frenzy of words, of movement, of images and of music break down today’s barriers between individual people and between these people and the world? And is the contrasting power of human reason capable of accessing a different truth of human existence and a different understanding of the world? Or is the principle of frenzy irrevocably confined by civilization and remodelled into consumption by economic necessity. But maybe it is the economy which, along with art, is secretly the ultimate arena for the human desire for transgression and release, where the most powerful and destructive experiences of frenzy are to be found?
Following on from NOTHING HURTS (1999), TRUST (2009) and PROTECT ME (2010), RAUSCH continues the artistic encounter between Falk Richter and Anouk van Dijk in their interdisciplinary investigation of dance and performance, of text and movement and develops this after Falk Richter’s research project PLAY LOUD (2011) into a deeper examination of new audio-visual worlds.
